SEX AFTER MEDICAL ABORTION

Many patients are concerned about the question of whether sex will be allowed after the procedure of medical abortion. Many women ask the same questions:

  • Is sex prohibited after MA or not?

  • If so, what is the duration of sex abstinence?

  • What does this duration depend on?

Let's try to answer these, no doubt important questions.

After a medical abortion (as well as after any other abortion) internal surface of the uterus is a wounded. The cervix remains open for several days, and microorganisms can easily enter it from the outside.

Termination of pregnancy does not go without hormonal disbalance. This disbalance in turn has a negative effect on the immune system and this creates favorable conditions for various kinds of inflammatory and hormonal complications.

Active vaginal or anal sex leads to mechanical action on the uterus, with the result that pathogenic microbes can penetrate into its cavity. This, in turn, is fraught with serious purulent-inflammatory complications, such as endometritis, salpingo-oophoritis or adnexitis and pelvioperitonitis. These diseases are serious so you should follow the recommendations of the doctor.

What forms of sex are prohibited

After a medical abortion, certain forms of sex are not allowed. For instance in the case where direct contact of the partner with the genitals and/or anus occurs. Other forms of sexual contact are not limited and are allowed within reasonable limits (it must be remembered that intense physical loads in the first weeks after abortion are prohibited).

In addition, a woman should avoid sexual climax or orgasms because during this process the cervix naturally sucks the contents of the posterior vaginal fornix. The first time after a medical abortion, it can also lead to purulent-inflammatory complications.

How long should you abstain from sex after medical abortion

A woman who decides to have a medical abortion should be prepared to abstain from sex for 2-3 weeks after taking Misoprostol. However, more precisely the duration of abstinence can be determined by blood discharges. As soon as they completely stop, you need to start counting at least 2 weeks. After this period, all forms of sex become permitted, but until the next menstrual period, the partner must use a condom regardless of any other methods of contraception which are usually used by the partners.

The recommendations concern only cases when there is no pathologies in the process of medical abortion.
